First Up: Jenica turns 7

This is lucky number seven for Miss Jenica -- and boy, was she excited.
On your birthday, here in our house, you get a "day" to plan -- it's all yours (within reason).  :)  Jenica chose to
1) Open Presents

 (with help from "little sister")
(Again, both Jenica and Kerry are so fortunate to have some very generous and loving family members who send them some of the best stuff for birthdays!)

2) Then it was off to her favorite place, The Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver.

 3) Finally, home quick to make her own birthday treats:  chocolate cookies stuffed with Nutella...
All in all, I think being seven is going to be great!

It's SPRING! It's SPRING!

Finally!!!!  Girls are outside!  They're getting really dirty!  And I don't even care!  :)
This was earlier in March...

Still cold at the beach this day... but just beautiful.

Since then, things have really started blooming... and things are much clearer than this too... :)

We found a good patch of dirt for making mud, right in the yard...

What I am so thrilled about is how they can now WALK -- on their own!  Ahhh... hiking here we come, at last...

Lots more to come... I hope...

Lots more laughs anyway...

Loving School

I have always loved school; that's probably what led me to be a teacher.  I have been hoping that the girls would get the same "high" from school that I typically did, but have been quiet about it overall.  Today, I saw in Jenica the feeling that made me love school.

I thought she was going to turn inside out when I picked her up today.  She was bursting with pride.  I was too, but managed to simply compliment her on her obvious hard work.
Write a report AND get to do a "Sculpy "figurine to go with it?!  Cool!
And... um, I don't remember being able to do this stuff when I was only 6.  I think I was doing phonics worksheets... or some other worksheet... and still thinking that was pretty good (mostly because they smelled so good! -- ahhh, the mimeograph machine... how I miss ya).
But all this gets me thinking.  I know that as a society we are pushing our kids to do more and more these days, earlier and earlier.  All in the name of ???  Being competitive?  Staying "current" with our international competitors?  And granted, young kids are capable of amazing things, much earlier than we give them credit for.  However, I think what's truly important and something to pay attention to and keep in sight is this:  where does the motivation to be great come from?  When the child is motivated from within... to push themselves, to see what happens when... to be proud of their own accomplishments without the need for stickers or incentives, now that's, that's something to behold and cherish.

I couldn't be more proud -- not of the report (which, don't get me wrong) is wonderful.  I'm most proud of her attitude and feeling of accomplishment -- of the work this represents and how this may continue to set the tone for her learning for years to come.

Thankful for Some Real Winter

We woke up to a bit of a surprise this morning -- snow snow and more snow!
(and lots of gray too, you'll notice).
Which means...

it's also a great day for a walk!
or a ride, as the case may be...
We love the snow...maybe because it's so rare here.
Enjoying it while we can!
Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm a Big Girl Afterall

Somebody is turning 4 and 1/2 this week.
And even after some protesting that she was "still a baby," her size told a different story.
It was finally time for...
A big girl bed!
I think she's happy.  (Meanwhile, I'm jealous!  I want a new bed too!)
:)

Welcome Thomas O'Malley

I don't like cats.
I mean...
I've always thought of myself as a "dog person."
But, man...
this little kitty sure is cute and snugly.
Thomas O'Malley was plucked from the sky --rescued from a tree in our yard, if you can believe it.
$400 later, he's definitely our cat.
(Old scoundrel...)

Finally, Halloween

Once upon a time...
Frog and Toad met up with a Bunny and a Ballerina Princess...
And many laughs ensued.
:)

(Hope you still have candy left! )
